A short self-assessment of your theory and practical experience before your Yachtmaster Coastal Preparation course.

Experience and sea time

Your recent sailing and skippering experience.

I have skippered coastal passages of 60+ miles as the person in charge.

Include passages where you planned the route, briefed the crew and handled the boat.

I have recent experience berthing and leaving in wind and tide.

Include bows-to, stern-to and alongside berths.

I have navigated at night using visual and electronic aids.

Night passages or night watches count.

Theory knowledge

Navigation, tides and collision regulations.

I can calculate tidal heights and streams for standard and secondary ports.

This includes using tidal curves and secondary port differences.

I understand the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.

Rights of way, lights, shapes and sound signals.

I can prepare a pilotage plan for an unfamiliar harbour.

Including transits, leading lines and clearing bearings.

Practical skills

Boat handling, pilotage and emergency procedures.

I can direct a man overboard recovery under power and sail.

As skipper, assigning roles rather than doing every task.

I am confident handling the yacht in close quarters under power.

Slow-speed control, prop walk and turning in confined spaces.

I can interpret a synoptic chart and forecast for a coastal passage.

Pressure systems, fronts and wind direction.
