Your offshore mileage and command experience.

I have skippered offshore passages of 60+ miles, including at night.

As the person in charge for the whole passage.

I have experience in heavy weather (Force 6+) as skipper or watch leader.

Include reefing, sea state and decision-making.

I have navigated using radar and AIS for collision avoidance.

In reduced visibility or near shipping.

Advanced theory

Ocean navigation, meteorology and regulations.

I can interpret synoptic charts and GRIB forecasts for offshore routeing.

Pressure systems, fronts and five-day outlook.

I understand Traffic Separation Schemes and ship navigation lights.

Including give-way rules for large vessels.

I can calculate fuel, water and provisioning requirements for a multi-day passage.

Including reserves and contingency.

Command and leadership

Skippering, crew management and emergencies.

I have led a crew through emergency drills (MOB, fire, flooding).

As skipper directing roles and communications.

I can manage crew fatigue and watch systems on long passages.

Including night watches and bad weather.

I understand yacht systems and can carry out basic troubleshooting.

Engine, electrics, steering and rigging.
