Yachtmaster Coastal Preparation

The Yachtmaster Coastal Preparation course is designed for sailors who already hold Day Skipper Practical and Theory and are working towards the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence. Over five days you will be put in the skipper's seat repeatedly, planning and executing coastal passages by day and night, handling the yacht in confined spaces, and making real command decisions while your instructor acts as crew. The week mirrors the exam format: you are expected to take charge, brief the crew, navigate, handle emergencies and berth the boat with minimal intervention. This is not a taught syllabus in the traditional sense; it is coached refinement of the skills and confidence the examiner will assess.

What you will do

You are the skipper. Produce the passage plan, present it to the crew, then execute it. The instructor will challenge assumptions and introduce realistic changes.

Key points
  • Tidal gates are the immovable constraint; everything else flexes around them.
  • Write down decision points before you leave: "If we are not abeam the headland by 1400, we divert to..."
  • Crew briefing happens before slipping, not once underway.
  • Delegate clearly: who is on nav, lookout, radio, lines.
Common mistakes
  • Planning on best-case speed.
  • No abort criteria, so decisions become emotional.
  • Failing to communicate the plan so the crew cannot help.

What you will do

Complete tidal calculations for every passage during the week, then compare your predictions with reality.

Key points
  • Secondary port corrections apply to both times and heights; interpolate carefully.
  • A 2-knot foul tide on a 6-knot boat costs one third of your speed made good.
  • Course to steer uses the tidal vector triangle: water track, ground track, tidal stream.
  • Use the tidal curve for anything that matters; twelfths is only a rough check.
Common mistakes
  • Applying height corrections but forgetting time corrections.
  • Mixing UT and local time.
  • Ignoring tidal set until the GPS shows you off track.

Calculate the earliest time you can cross a bar charted at 0.8 m with a draught of 1.8 m and 1.0 m safety margin, using a secondary port.

What you will do

Key points
  • A good pilotage plan is built around transits, leading lines, clearing bearings and depth contours.
  • Note the tidal height at your ETA; the plan changes if you are late.
  • GPS is one source among many; confirm it with visual or depth evidence.
  • Keep the plan where it can be read in the dark and spray.
Common mistakes
  • Over-reliance on the plotter.
  • Pilotage notes too detailed to use in a seaway.
  • Forgetting the effect of tidal height on leading lights and buoys.

What you will do

Repeated arrivals and departures in different conditions, with the instructor deliberately reducing help so you must brief and execute.

Key points
  • Slow is pro: only go as fast as you are prepared to hit something.
  • Decide whether wind or tide is dominant and approach into it where possible.
  • A short burst ahead with helm hard over gives steerage with almost no headway.
  • Prop walk is predictable: know which way your stern kicks in astern and use it.
Common mistakes
  • Long bursts of throttle instead of short kicks.
  • Fighting prop walk instead of turning the other way.
  • Approaching a berth downwind/down-tide with no escape route.

  • Lay the anchor with the boat stopped or moving slowly astern; do not drop it on the run.
  • Set the anchor by reversing hard and checking transits ashore.
  • For buoy work, approach slowly into wind/tide and have a boat hook and line ready.
Common mistakes
  • Insufficient scope for the conditions.
  • Dropping the anchor while still moving ahead.
  • Not checking the anchor has set before leaving it.

  • Always have a bail-out option if the forecast deteriorates.
  • Record forecast source and issue time so you know when it goes stale.
Common mistakes
  • Using a single forecast source.
  • Ignoring the timing of frontal passage.
  • Committing to a long leg with no refuge.
